Antique French Tortoiseshell Sewing Etui c. 1800’s
Antique French 19th Century Tortoiseshell Casket with bronze mounts and encasing a fabulous sewing etui. The egg shaped casket sits on bronze base and the top finial is adorned by a circular bronze swirl.

All of the old original sewing implements are 22 carat gold excluding the thimble and remain with this lovely early 1800s mechanical "egg" casket, The set includes: scissors (broken - refer to photo), thimble, needle case, stiletto and bodkin.
The ornamental top is the lever, and pushed downward, it releases the catch that then opens the tortoiseshell egg-shaped etui to reveal its contents.
They were made with perfume vials, sewing sets, sometimes as holder for cigars, and numerous other uses. These would have been marketed originally from the boutiques of the old Richelieu Palace in Paris, more simply referred to as the Palais Royal.
Condition: Unfortunately, there is damage to the tortiseshell (please refer to photo). The timble is a later replacement. The scissors are damaged, one of the tips has broken off (please refer to photo).
