Goldscheider was founded in 1885, the Viennese Manufactory Friedrich Goldscheider was soon at the head of European ceramics production Figures and vessels made of faience and terracotta as well as bronze and alabaster to the highest standards of artistry and workmanship were launched in the period styles Historicism, Art Nouveau and Art Déco. Collaboration with distinguished sculptors and ceramicists - including Walter Bosse, Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier, Demêtre Chiparus, Stephan Dakon, Benno Geiger Kurt Goebel, Rudolf Knörlein, Dina Kuhn, Josef Lorenzl, Ida Meisinger, Adolf Prischl, Hans Stephan Stoltenberg- Lerche, Arthur Strasser, Wilhelm Thomasch Vally (Valerie) Wieselthier and many more who also contributed to the success of Goldscheider ceramics.
This success story was, however, brutally disrupted by Aryanization in 1938: as Jews, the Goldscheider family were forced to emigrate; the venerable firm that looked back on such a long tradition was sold to a new proprietor, who was unable to keep up the high artistic quality standard. The Goldscheider brothers did succeed in building up new ceramics firms in exile in the US and England. Walter Goldscheider even returned to Vienna after the Second World War to take over his old company again - however, the sale of the company to Carstens, a German firm, in the 1950s put an end to the great Goldscheider ceramics tradition.
Today Goldscheider ceramics are sought after by collectors worldwide.
